I found a small workaround to get rid of the funny white border that some older or even recent graphics programs can leave when exporting to the png format. Oddly, I noticed when I would convert my png's for an animated sprite this would go away. I always thought it was because the sprite was in motion, so I never noticed that the sprite sheet creator I have been using was a workaround.
Normally, you use this program to make a tiled sprite sheet. It is a great little program, and available free from Carl Nordlund (DemestaHB on the Creators Site - www.demesta.com) - you can grab the file below.
If you wish to clear the white border around one sprite, you will first have to open two files, hit create sprite sheet, and then go back and select the file that you really want to work with. From there hit create sprite sheet again, you should see the preview showing just the one file again, hit save sprite sheet and you are done. Make sure you save the sprite as something other than the file that you have opened, otherwise it will give you an error (it will not overwrite the file).
Nick Gravelyn made a great robust shiny sprite sheet packer for when you need it to output the locations of the images into a txt file. You can see more about it here.
